  • milk - 2 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 1 Tbsp
  • margarine - 1/4 c
  • pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • medium potatoes - 6 item
  • medium onion, chopped - 1 item
  • dry bread crumbs - 1/4 c
  • Cheddar cheese - 2 c

How to make au gratin potatoes:

Heat oven to 325°. Peel potatoes; slice thinly. Heat margarine in saucepan over medium heat. Cook onion about 2 minutes. Stir occasionally until bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in milk and 1 1/2 cups cheese. Heat to boiling. Stir constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute.

Spread potatoes in ungreased 1 1/2-quart casserole. Pour cheese sauce over potatoes. Bake for 1 hour. Mix remaining cheese and bread crumbs; sprinkle over potatoes. Bake 15 to 20 minutes longer, until top is brown and bubbly.
