How to make the best apple pie:

Crust:2 c. flour dash of salt2 c. plus 2/3 Tbsp. Crisco shortening5 Tbsp. cold water Peel, core and slice apples. In a large saucepan, add all ingredients, except those needed for crust. Simmer (stirring occasionally) on medium heat until apples are slightly tender and the sauce thickens. Set apples aside to cool.

Crust: Add dash of salt to the flour; cut the shortening into the flour until the mixture resembles pea size crumbs. Add one tablespoon of water at a time, blending with a fork. Use hands to form a dough ball; cut ball in half. Roll out each half to fit pie pan (2-inch past rim of inverted pie pan). Fill bottom crust with apples, using enough sauce to just cover apples. Place top crust and seal tight (pressing top and bottom crusts together, rolling upwards, pinching together). Make small slits on top of pie; sprinkle with sugar and bake in 425° oven for 30 minutes. Serve warm, not hot. Serves 6 to 8.
