Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/3 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • warm water
  • bread flour - 6 c
  • instant potato flakes - 3 Tbsp
  • RapidRise yeast - 2 pkg

How to make sourdough bread:

Grease a large bowl. In another bowl, mix all ingredients and make a stiff batter. Place dough in greased bowl and brush some oil on top of the dough. Cover with a cloth and let set in warm place until it doubles. Do not refrigerate! Push dough down and knead well. Divide into 3 or 4 loaves. Knead each loaf 8 to 10 times. Place in greased loaf pans. Oil top of each loaf. Cover and let rise until just about doubled. Bake at 300° for 35 to 40 minutes. Bread will sound hollow when done. Remove from pans. Brush with butter or margarine and let cool on wire rack.
