Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/2 tsp
  • salt
  • flour - 2 tsp
  • melted butter - 1 item
  • soft butter - 2 Tbsp
  • egg, beaten - 1 item
  • Worcestershire sauce - 1/4 tsp
  • pepper to taste - 1 item
  • grated onion - 2 tsp
  • ground chuck or steak
  • canned hot peppers, seeds removed and cut in small pieces to taste - 1 item
  • Mold into steak shapes about 1 1/4-inch thick

How to make salisbury steak:

Mix all ingredients, except butter, thoroughly. Mold into steak shapes about 1 1/4-inch thick. Place in buttered baking dish and brush melted butter on tops. Bake at 450° for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 325° and bake for about 25 minutes longer. (At this time, turn the steaks over.) Brush with more butter once or twice during this baking.

If you use hamburger instead of the ground steak, you will need to dip out the rendered fat before adding the Tomato Sauce.Tomato Sauce:1 (No. 2) can tomatoes1 tsp. grated onion1/2 tsp. salt1/2 tsp. sugar2 Tbsp. soft butter2 tsp. flour1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce Can also add more finely chopped canned hot peppers to taste. Mix the ingredients while the steaks are cooking and pour over them and return to the oven just until the sauce thickens.

Great company dish served with mashed potatoes and green beans.
