Ingredients/Components

  • sugar
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • butter or margarine
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • cornstarch - 3 Tbsp
  • water - 1 c
  • cocoa - 2 Tbsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • vinegar - 1 tsp
  • Crisco - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 1/4 c
  • cake flour

How to make red velvet cake:

Frosting:1 c. butter or margarine1 c. sugar3 Tbsp. cornstarch1 c. water Cream Crisco and sugar. Make paste of cocoa and food coloring. Add to mixture. Add eggs, one at a time. Cream continually. Add flour and salt alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla and mix well. Remove from mixer and sprinkle soda over batter. Then add vinegar. Stir thoroughly. Do not beat.

Pour mixture into three greased and lined round cake pans (or two oblong pans). Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely before frosting.

Frosting: Boil cornstarch and water until thick. Set aside to cool. Cream butter and sugar. Add cornstarch mixture and whip until like whipped cream. Frost when cake is cooled completely.
