  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • eggs - 2 item
  • sugar
  • red food coloring - 2 oz
  • cocoa - 2 tsp
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • cake flour
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • vinegar - 1 tsp
  • Add eggs, beating well
  • cornstarch - 2 Tbsp
  • water - 1 c
  • sticks butter - 2 item

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, beating well. In a cup, mix into a paste the coloring and cocoa; add to ingredients and add vanilla. Pour buttermilk into cup used to make paste, stirring to get all the coloring. Sift flour and salt, and alternating with buttermilk, add to batter. Beat well and fold in soda, then vinegar. Bake at 300° to 325° for 20 to 30 minutes or until done. Makes 2 layers.Icing:1 tsp. vanilla2 Tbsp. cornstarch1 c. sugar1 c. water2 sticks butter Cook cornstarch with water until thick. Allow to cool. Cream butter. Add sugar and vanilla. Mix this until fluffy. Add sugar mixture to cornstarch mixture, beating well until like whipped cream. Spread on cold cake layers.
