  • eggs - 2 item
  • milk - 1 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • sifted cake flour
  • level cocoa - 3 Tbsp
  • Adams butter flavor - 1 tsp
  • "Adams Best" vanilla - 1 tsp
  • bottle Adams red color
  • Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and flavors

How to make red velvet cake:

Preheat oven to 350°. Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and flavors. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to first mixture. Alternately add flour and buttermilk. Mix soda and vinegar in small bowl; add to batter. Blend. Bake in 3 (9-inch or 10-inch) pans for 20 to 25 minutes at 350°. Let cool completely. Cover with frosting.Frosting:3 Tbsp. flour1/2 tsp. salt1 c. milk1 c. shortening1 c. sugar2 tsp. "Adams Best" vanilla1/4 tsp. Adams butter flavor Cook milk, flour and salt until thick, stirring constantly. Let cool. Cream shortening and sugar very well; add flavors. Combine with the first mixture; beat well.
