Ingredients/Components

  • sugar
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 1/4 c
  • butter - 1 c
  • cocoa - 1 Tbsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • red food coloring - 2 oz
  • cake flour - 2 c
  • Angel Flake coconut - 1 c
  • baking soda, dissolved in 1 Tbsp - 1 tsp
  • and 2 Tbsp - 1/2 c
  • Add eggs and beat well

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Sift flour, salt and cocoa 3 times and add alternately to creamed mixture with buttermilk. Add vanilla and red coloring. Last fold in soda and vinegar; do not beat. Bake in 2 (9-inch) pans at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes.Frosting:1 c. milk1 c. sugar1/4 tsp. salt1/4 c. flour1 c. butter2 tsp. vanilla1 c. Angel Flake coconut Mix flour and salt with milk until blended; cook slowly until real thick. Cool thoroughly. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add to cooled mixture and beat well. Frost cake and garnish with coconut.
