Ingredients/Components

  • Argo cornstarch - 1 c
  • box Arm & Hammer baking soda 2 c - 1 lb
  • cold water add food coloring for colored only

How to make play clay:

Stir together baking soda and cornstarch in a saucepan. Add water and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches consistency of moist mashed potatoes (approximately 10 to 15 minutes). If cooked too long, finished ornaments may crack. Remove and put on a plate. Cover with a damp cloth. When cool, pat until smooth.

Make shapes. Roll play clay out to 1/4-inch thickness between sheets of waxed paper. Remove waxed paper and cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Use a toothpick to make a hole for hanging. Store unused portions in tightly sealed plastic bag in refrigerator.

To dry play clay: Air dry on wire rack overnight. Or, preheat oven to 350°; turn off and place ornaments on cookie sheet in oven until dry. Or microwave on paper towel at Medium power for 30 seconds per side.

Decorate: When dry, paint with water colors or acrylics or use felt tip markers. Can also decorate with glue, glitter or varnish.
