Ingredients/Components

  • granulated sugar - 1/4 c
  • salt - 1/4 tsp
  • brown sugar - 1/2 c
  • egg, slightly beaten - 1 item
  • all-purpose flour
  • powdered sugar - 1 item
  • allspice - 1/2 tsp
  • ground cloves - 1/2 tsp
  • ground cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • black pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • chopped almonds - 1 c
  • soft butter or margarine - 1/2 c
  • anise flavoring - 1/4 tsp
  • chopped citron - 1/2 c
  • cardamon - 1/4 tsp

How to make pfeffernuesse:

Cream the butter, anise flavoring and sugars. Blend in egg. Add flour, salt and spices. Blend thoroughly. Stir in chopped almonds and citron. Chill in refrigerator a few hours. Shape dough into 1-inch balls using about a teaspoon of dough for each. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake in a 350° oven for about 10 minutes. Remove from oven and cool a few minutes. Roll in powdered sugar.
