Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • salt - 1/2 c
  • vinegar
  • celery seed - 3 Tbsp
  • medium onions - 1 doz
  • mustard seed - 4 Tbsp
  • turmeric - 1 Tbsp
  • cabbage, chopped - 4 qt
  • sweet green peppers - 1 doz
  • ground mustard - 4 Tbsp
  • sweet red peppers - 1 doz
  • green tomatoes, chopped - 2 qt
  • ginger ground - 1 Tbsp
  • pickling spices tied in a bag - 1 item
  • whole mix - 2 Tbsp

How to make chow chow:

Chop onions and peppers fine. Combine all vegetables and mix with salt. Let stand overnight; drain well. Combine sugar, spices and vinegar. Bring to boiling point and simmer about 20 minutes. Add other ingredients and simmer to consistency desired. Remove spice bag; pack into hot jars and seal.

Hint: Serve with meat and fresh vegetables.
