Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • salt - 1/4 c
  • vinegar - 1/2 gal
  • ground ginger - 1/2 Tbsp
  • celery seed - 2 Tbsp
  • chopped cabbage - 1/2 gal
  • green peppers - 6 item
  • turmeric - 1/2 Tbsp
  • onions - 6 item
  • chopped green tomatoes - 1 qt
  • ground mustard - 2 Tbsp
  • red peppers - 6 item
  • mixed whole spices - 2 Tbsp

How to make chow chow:

Chop onions and peppers. Mix all vegetables with 1/4 cup salt. Let stand overnight. Tie mixed spices in a bag. Add sugar and spices to vinegar. Simmer 20 minutes. Add all other ingredients and simmer until hot and well seasoned. Remove spice bag.
