  • sugar - 3 Tbsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • melted margarine - 2 Tbsp
  • all-purpose flour
  • pepper - 1/2 tsp
  • shredded cabbage - 4 c
  • shredded cheese American or Cheddar - 1 c
  • bread crumbs or Ritz crackers
  • milk 1% or 2% - 1 c

How to make cabbage au gratin:

Topping:2 c. bread crumbs or Ritz crackers4 Tbsp. melted margarine Boil cabbage for 5 minutes in water. Drain well. Combine flour, sugar, salt and pepper. Mix. Add milk, margarine and cheese. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth and thick. Alternate layers of cabbage, sauce and more grated cheese if desired in a 1 1/2-quart casserole. Combine bread crumbs and melted margarine, stirring until moistened. Sprinkle crumbs over casserole. Bake in a 350° oven for 25 minutes.
