Bread and butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 5 c
- vinegar - 4 c
- celery seed
- mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
- turmeric
- canning salt - 1/3 c
- sliced cucumbers - 4 qt
- water to cover pickles - 1 item
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Soak cucumbers in salt water (1/3 cup canning salt and water to cover cucumbers). Soak for 4 hours, then drain well.Mix last 5 ingredients in large pan. Add cucumbers. Cook slowly for approximately 20 minutes until cucumbers change colors. Put cucumbers in canning jars. Pour liquid (mixture that pickles were cooked in) over pickles in jars to cover them well. Seal.
