Ingredients/Components

  • sliced cucumbers - 4 qt
  • medium white onions, sliced - 6 item
  • green peppers, chopped - 2 item
  • buds garlic, whole and unwrapped - 3 item
  • salt - 1/3 c
  • sugar - 5 c
  • turmeric
  • celery seed
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • vinegar - 3 c

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Do not peel cucumbers. Slice thin. Add onions, peppers and whole garlic buds (do not separate cloves). Add salt. Cover with cracked ice. Mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours. Drain thoroughly. Combine remaining ingredients. Pour over cucumber mixture. Heat just to boiling. Seal in hot sterilized jars. Makes 4 quarts.
