Bread and butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- cold water - 5 c
- ginger - 1 tsp
- prepared mustard - 2 tsp
- celery seed - 1 tsp
- turmeric - 1/4 tsp
- pickling salt - 1/3 c
- green tomatoes or cucumbers - 3 lb
- vinegar with 1/2 c - 2 c
- few dashes red pepper - 1 item
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Wash and slice vegetables. Place in enamelware or glass bowl. Sprinkle with salt and add water. Cover and let stand 2 to 4 hours or overnight. Turn into colander and drain for 10 to 15 minutes. Put into kettle. Add some sliced onion, then vinegar, sugar and spices. Heat to boiling. Simmer 3 to 4 minutes. Pack, seal 3 to 5 pints for 5 minutes in boiling water bath.Recipe categories: American, Condiments, etc., Vegetables.
