  • sugar - 1/4 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • buttermilk
  • baking powder
  • baking soda
  • egg - 1 item
  • shortening - 2 Tbsp
  • seedless raisins - 1/2 c
  • dark molasses - 3/4 c
  • whole wheat flour
  • yellow cornmeal - 3/4 c

How to make boston brown bread:

Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in egg and molasses. Beat in remaining ingredients. Spoon into 2 well-greased 1 quart molds, filling a little more than half full. Cover with foil. Set molds on rack in deep kettle and add boiling water to come halfway up sides of molds. Cover and steam for 2 1/2 hours. Replace boiling water to keep up level of liquid.
