Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1 c
  • ground walnuts - 3 lb
  • filo dough - 2 lb
  • Land of Lakes unsalted butter, melted - 1 lb
  • rosewater - 3 Tbsp
  • clear Karo syrup corn syrup - 3 c
  • lemon juice and rosewater - 1 item

How to make baklava:

Mix Karo syrup, a few drops of lemon juice and rosewater together and set aside. In another bowl, add ground nuts together with the sugar and rosewater. Mix together by hand and set aside.

Grease the bottom of a large baking pan with melted butter. Lay one (1) sheet of dough evenly in the pan and butter lightly. Next, lay two (2) sheets of filo dough evenly and butter. Repeat until you use up one pound of the filo dough. Do not butter the last layer.

Spread walnut mixture evenly over the layers of dough in the pan.

Lay one sheet of dough over nut mixture and butter lightly. Then add two (2) sheets and butter lightly. Continue adding dough layers in this pattern until it is all used. Butter the top of the final layer. Cut dough into diamond shapes. (Cut in rows lengthwise, and then diagonally across the pan.)

Place foil around edges and bake at 350° for 20 minutes. Remove foil, bake additional 40 minutes. Turn oven down to 300°, put on top rack of oven for 20 minutes longer. Pour syrup over it immediately after removing from oven. Let cool.
