5 layer casserole
Ingredients/Components
- salt - 1 tsp
- water - 1/3 c
- shortening - 1 Tbsp
- chopped onion - 2/3 c
- chili powder - 2 tsp
- catsup - 1/3 c
- ground beef - 1 lb
- cheese - 1 c
- can tomatoes - 1 lb
- green pepper - 2/3 c
- uncooked rice - 1/3 c
- large white potatoes, sliced thin - 2 item
How to make 5 layer casserole:
First Layer: Put shortening in skillet. Brown beef and onions. When partially brown add salt and chili powder and finish browning. Peel and slice potatoes.Second Layer: Cover bottom of a greased baking dish with potatoes, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.
Third Layer: Spread rice then beef mixture on top.
Fourth Layer: Sprinkle chopped green peppers over mixture.
Fifth Layer: Add tomatoes, water and catsup mixture. Do not stir. Bake, covered, at 350° for 45 minutes. Add cheese last 5 minutes. Can be cut in squares. Holds shape.
