Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 1 tsp
  • water - 1/3 c
  • shortening - 1 Tbsp
  • chopped onion - 2/3 c
  • chili powder - 2 tsp
  • catsup - 1/3 c
  • ground beef - 1 lb
  • cheese - 1 c
  • can tomatoes - 1 lb
  • green pepper - 2/3 c
  • uncooked rice - 1/3 c
  • large white potatoes, sliced thin - 2 item

How to make 5 layer casserole:

First Layer: Put shortening in skillet. Brown beef and onions. When partially brown add salt and chili powder and finish browning. Peel and slice potatoes.

Second Layer: Cover bottom of a greased baking dish with potatoes, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.

Third Layer: Spread rice then beef mixture on top.

Fourth Layer: Sprinkle chopped green peppers over mixture.

Fifth Layer: Add tomatoes, water and catsup mixture. Do not stir. Bake, covered, at 350° for 45 minutes. Add cheese last 5 minutes. Can be cut in squares. Holds shape.
