Soften active dry yeast in warm water at 110°. Add 1 teaspoon sugar to yeast mixture. Combine shortening, sugar and salt. Add scalded milk. Cool to lukewarm. Add beaten egg. Add 2 cups whole wheat flour. Beat until flour is moistened. Add remaining white flour. If using electric dough hooks, beat 4 minutes. If kneading by hand, knead on lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl, turning once to grease surface and cover. Let rise until double. Shape rolls. Let rise until double again. Bake in 375° oven about 15 minutes or until golden brown. Can be put into refrigerator immediately after mixing for 1/2 day or more, before making into rolls.Recipe categories: Breads, Healthy, Rolls/biscuits.
