Ingredients/Components
- shortening part butter or margarine - 1/2 c
- light brown sugar - 1/4 c
- egg yolk - 1 item
- vanilla - 1/2 tsp
- sifted all-purpose flour - 1 c
- salt - 1/4 tsp
- egg white - 1 item
- finely or coarsely chopped nuts - 3/4 c
- jelly, jam or tinted butter frosting - 1 item
How to make thumbprints:
Cream shortening and brown sugar. Add egg yolk and vanilla. Beat thoroughly. Sift flour and salt. Stir into creamed mixture. Roll dough into ball, 3/4-inch in diameter.Beat white slightly with fork. Dip balls in egg white. Roll in nuts. Place about 1-inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Press thumb gently into the center of each. Bake in preheated 350° oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden in color. Cool.
Fill thumbprint with colorful jelly, jam or tinted butter frosting. Makes about 3 dozen cookies. I always double this receipt.
