Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 2 c
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • milk - 1/4 c
  • buttermilk - 1/2 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • all-purpose flour - 2 c
  • stick butter or margarine - 1 item
  • unsifted powdered sugar
  • Frosting:1 stick butter
  • dark, unsweetened cocoa - 1/4 c
  • dark cocoa - 2 Tbsp
  • strong coffee or water - 1 c

How to make texas brownies:

Frosting:1 stick butter2 Tbsp. dark cocoa1/4 c. milk3 1/2 c. unsifted powdered sugar1 tsp. vanilla In a large bowl combine flour and sugar. In a heavy saucepan combine butter, shortening, cocoa and coffee or water. Stir and heat to boiling. Pour boiling mixture over the flour and sugar. Add eggs, buttermilk, baking soda and vanilla. Mix well, using a wooden spoon or mixer on high. Pour into a well-buttered 17 1/2 x 11-inch jelly roll pan. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes.

While brownies bake, prepare frosting in a saucepan. Combine butter, cocoa and milk. Heat to boiling. Mix in powdered sugar and vanilla until frosting is smooth. Pour warm frosting over brownies as soon as you take them from the oven. Cool. Cut into 48 bars.
