Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 2 tsp
  • flour - 1/3 c
  • shortening - 3 Tbsp
  • pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • medium onion, sliced - 1 item
  • steak 1-inch - 2 lb
  • cooked canned tomatoes - 1 c

How to make swiss steak:

Combine and pound the flour, salt and pepper into the steak. Brown slowly in shortening in a heavy skillet. Pour tomatoes over meat. Top with sliced onion. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Cover and bake about 1 hour, until steak is fork-tender. Makes 6 servings.

This can also be cooked on top of the range or in an electric skillet.
