  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 1 Tbsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 2 oz

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time. Make thick paste of cocoa and food coloring. Add to creamed mixture. Sift flour and salt together and add to creamed mixture. Add soda and vinegar; mix well. Bake in a 9-inch pan for 30 minutes at 350°.
