  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 2 c
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 1 Tbsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 tsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • nuts optional - 1 item
  • red food coloring - 2 oz
  • Add eggs
  • coconut optional - 1 item

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs. Beat well. Sift flour, salt and cocoa 3 times. Mix with buttermilk; add vanilla and red coloring. Fold in soda and vinegar. Do not beat. Makes 2 layers. Bake at 375° for 30 to 40 minutes in greased and floured pans.Icing:1 c. milk1/4 c. flour1/4 tsp. soda1 c. sugar1 c. shortening2 tsp. vanilla nuts (optional) coconut (optional) Cook milk, flour and soda until thick, let cool. Cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Beat on high speed. Add cooked mixture. Add vanilla and spread on cooled cake layers. Sprinkle with nuts and coconut or leave plain.
