Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- soda - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 2 Tbsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- vinegar - 1 tsp
- shortening - 1/2 c
- plain flour
- butter flavoring - 1 tsp
- red food coloring - 2 oz
- clear vanilla - 1 tsp
- Make paste of food coloring and cocoa
- butter I use 1/2 butter and 1/2 Crisco - 1 c
How to make red velvet cake:
Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make paste of food coloring and cocoa. Add to cream mixture. Add salt and flour with buttermilk, vanilla, soda and vinegar. Do not overbeat, just blend. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.Frosting:4 Tbsp. flour1 c. butter (I use 1/2 butter and 1/2 Crisco)1 tsp. clear vanilla1 c. milk1 c. sugar Cook flour and milk on low heat until thick. Cool. Cream sugar, butter and vanilla until fluffy. Add flour mixture when cooled. Beat mixture until it looks like whipped cream.Recipe categories: Desserts, Cakes, American.
