Ingredients/Components
- red food coloring - 2 oz
- Nestle Quik - 3 tsp
- Crisco - 1/2 c
- sugar
- eggs - 2 item
- cake flour
- salt - 1 tsp
- buttermilk
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- vinegar - 1 Tbsp
- soda - 1 tsp
- Cream Crisco and sugar
- white granulated sugar - 1 c
- flour
- milk room temperature - 1/2 c
How to make red velvet cake:
Make a thin paste of food coloring and Nestle Quik. Cream Crisco and sugar. Add whole eggs and color paste. Mix together. Sift together cake flour and salt. Sift 3 times. Add alternately the buttermilk and dry ingredients. Add vanilla. Beat with mixer for 3 minutes. Remove from mixer; add vinegar and soda. Mix into batter by hand. Bake in 3 greased and floured 8-inch round pans at 350° for 35 minutes or in a 9 x 13-inch pan for 40 minutes.Icing:1 stick margarine1/2 c. Crisco1 c. white granulated sugar3 heaping Tbsp. flour1/2 c. milk (room temperature) Cream in mixer the margarine with Crisco. Add sugar. Add flour one teaspoon at a time. Add milk.
