Ingredients/Components

  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • granulated sugar - 1/4 c
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • all-purpose flour - 2 c
  • light brown sugar, packed
  • chopped pecans or walnuts - 1 c
  • oleo room temperature
  • yolk of 1 large egg

How to make praline squares:

Heat oven to 350°. Beat 1 cup oleo, 3/4 cup brown sugar and the granulated sugar until creamy. Beat in egg yolk, vanilla and salt. Stir in 1/2 cup of the nuts, then the flour. Press dough evenly into 15 x 10 x 1-inch baking pan. Bake 15 minutes .

Meanwhile, combine remaining 3/4 cup oleo and brown sugar in small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat and boil 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove baking pan from oven and prick dough all over with a fork. Pour sugar syrup over dough and spread evenly. Bake 5 minutes longer. Remove from oven and place on wire rack. Immediately sprinkle with rest of 1/2 cup nuts. Cool 15 minutes. Cut into 1-inch squares and cool completely before removing from pan.
