German chocolate cake
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 2 c
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- pkg - 1 oz
- butter or margarine - 1 c
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- egg yolks - 4 item
- buttermilk - 1 c
- flaked coconut
- baking soda - 1 tsp
- boiling water - 1/2 c
- margarine - 1/2 c
- sifted all-purpose flour
- egg whites, stiffly beaten - 4 item
- Sift flour, soda and salt
How to make german chocolate cake:
Melt chocolate in boiling water; cool. Sift flour, soda and salt. Cream butter and sugar well. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each. Blend in vanilla and melted chocolate. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating after each addition. Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour into three 9-inch layer pans lined on the bottom with wax paper. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Cool in pans for 15 minutes. Remove.Frosting:1 c. evaporated milk1 c. sugar3 egg yolks1/2 c. margarine1 tsp. vanilla1 1/3 c. flaked coconut Combine first 5 ingredients in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens, about 17 minutes. Remove from heat. Add coconut.
