  • pkg - 1 oz
  • milk - 2 c
  • butter or margarine - 1/4 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • all-purpose flour - 1/4 c
  • egg, beaten - 1 item
  • paprika - 1 item
  • shredded sharp Cheddar cheese - 2 c

How to make creamy macaroni and cheese:

Cook macaroni according to package directions, omitting salt. Drain well; set aside. Melt butter in a heavy saucepan over low heat; add flour, stirring until smooth. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually add milk; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly. Stir in salt and cheese, stirring until cheese melts. Gradually stir about 1/4 of hot mixture into beaten egg; add to remaining hot mixture, stirring constantly. Stir cheese sauce into macaroni; pour into a lightly greased 1 3/4-quart baking dish. Sprinkle with paprika, if desired. Bake at 350° for 35 minutes.

Extra grated cheese may be added to top during last 10 minutes of cooking time. An additional variation would be to also add crispy crumbled bacon on top after cheese has melted.
