Dissolve yeast in warm water. Scald milk; stir in 1/4 cup sugar, salt and shortening. Cool to lukewarm. Stir in egg, half the flour and yeast. Beat with a spoon until smooth. Add enough flour to make a soft dough. Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead until smooth. Place in a bowl and let rise until doubled in bulk. Punch down and let rest 10 minutes. Roll dough into a rectangle; brush with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Roll up starting at narrow side; pinch ends and place in a greased 9 x 5-inch loaf pan. Brush top with butter and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon if desired. Let rise until doubled and bake at 375° for 40 to 45 minutes. Frost, if desired.
