Ingredients/Components

  • cornstarch - 2 Tbsp
  • water - 1 c
  • soy sauce - 1/3 c
  • salt and pepper to taste - 1 item
  • small onion, chopped - 1 item
  • fat - 2 Tbsp
  • beef, diced - 1 lb
  • pork, diced - 1/2 lb
  • large bunch celery in 1/2-inch slices - 1 item
  • cans water chestnuts, drained and sliced - 2 to
  • 2 can 2 1/2 c
  • can broiled sliced mushrooms - 1 oz

How to make chow mein:

Brown meats in hot fat. Add soy sauce and 1 cup water. Simmer 2 minutes. Add celery and onions. Simmer 1 1/2 hours. Blend cornstarch and water. Stir into meat mixture. Add chestnuts, bean sprouts and mushrooms. Heat through. Season. Serve over rice or chow-mein noodles. Makes 8 servings.
