Ingredients/Components

  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • granulated sugar - 1/2 c
  • butter or margarine - 1/2 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour
  • confectioners sugar - 1 c
  • almond extract
  • egg - 1 item
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • crushed peppermint candy - 1/2 c
  • red food color - 1/2 tsp

How to make candy cane cookies:

Heat oven to 375°. Mix thoroughly the butter, shortening, confectioners sugar, egg and flavorings. Blend in flour and salt. Divide dough in half. Blend food color into one half. Shape 1 teaspoon dough from each half into 4-inch rope. For smooth, even ropes, roll them back and forth on lightly floured board. Place ropes side by side; press on baking sheet. Curve top of cookie down to form handle of cane. Bake for about 9 minutes, or until set and very light brown, if you wish.

Mix the crushed peppermint candy and 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Immediately sprinkle cookies with candy mixture. Remove from baking sheet. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.
