Ingredients/Components

  • vanilla - 1/2 tsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • chopped nuts - 1/2 c
  • baking powder - 1 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • shortening - 1/4 c
  • sifted flour - 3/4 c
  • light brown sugar, packed - 1 c

How to make butterscotch brownies:

Heat oven to 350°. Grease an 8-inch square pan. In saucepan, melt over low heat shortening; take from heat and stir in brown sugar. Set aside to cool. Into cooled sugar and shortening, stir egg; add and blend well flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in vanilla and nuts. Spread in pan. Bake 25 minutes, only until a toothpick stuck in center comes out clean. Do not overbake! Cool in pan and cut into squares. Makes 16 (2-inch) squares.
