Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 3/4 c
  • water - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 c
  • ginger - 1/2 tsp
  • celery seed - 1/2 tsp
  • medium onions - 3 item
  • medium cucumbers - 5 item
  • mustard seed - 1/2 tsp
  • turmeric - 1/4 tsp
  • salt or less - 1/4 c

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Wash cucumbers; do not peel. Cut in thin slices. Peel and wash onions. Combine onions and cucumbers. Add salt and let stand 2 hours. Drain. Heat vinegar, water, celery seed, mustard seed, sugar, ginger and turmeric to boiling. Add cucumbers and onions; boil slowly until tender. Pack in freshly sterilized jars while hot. Makes 5 pints.
