Bread and butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sliced, unpeeled medium cucumbers - 16 c
- green peppers, sliced - 2 item
- cloves garlic, scored - 3 item
- pickling salt - 1/3 c
- cracked ice - 1 item
- sugar - 5 c
- cider vinegar - 3 c
- mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
- celery seed
- ground turmeric
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Combine cucumbers, onion, green pepper and whole garlic cloves. Add salt; cover with cracked ice. Mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours; drain well. Discard garlic. Combine remaining ingredients; pour over cucumber mixture. Bring to boiling. Fill hot, clean pint jars with vegetables and liquid, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Adjust lids. Process in boiling water bath 5 minutes for pints. (Start timing when water returns to boiling.) Makes 8 pints.Recipe categories: American, Condiments, etc., Vegetables.
