Ingredients/Components

  • cinnamon - 2 tsp
  • water
  • nuts, chopped - 8 oz
  • honey - 1 c
  • unsalted butter - 1 c
  • phyllo dough - 1 pkg
  • grated peel of 1 orange or 1 lemon

How to make baklava:

Butter 9 x 13 x 2-inch baking pan. Line bottom with 2 sheets of phyllo. Sprinkle with butter and chopped nuts. Put on another layer of phyllo. Sprinkle with melted butter and alternate layers of nuts and phyllo, sprinkling butter on each layer until about 1 1/2-inch thick. Finish with 3 layers of phyllo. With a sharp knife, cut through the first 3 layers. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes, then increase to 400°. Bake until golden brown. Let cool.

Boil the honey, peel, cinnamon and water together. Pour the hot syrup over cold baklava. All syrup should be absorbed. Finish cutting through layers. Serve in diamond shaped pieces.
