Apple dumplings
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1 c
- cinnamon - 1/8 tsp
- milk - 1/2 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- water - 1 c
- nutmeg - 1/8 tsp
- baking powder - 2 tsp
- shortening - 2/3 c
- drops red food coloring - 2 item
- enriched flour - 2 c
- whole apples, peeled and cored - 6 item
How to make apple dumplings:
Cook first 5 ingredients, bringing to a boil, then add butter. Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir until moistened. Roll 1/4-inch thick on lightly floured surface; cut into 6-inch squares.Place whole apples or 1/2 apple on each square. Sprinkle each apple with cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg. Dot with butter. Fold corners to center and pinch edges together. Place 1-inch apart in a greased 11 x 7 x 1 1/2-inch baking pan. Spoon this syrup over dumplings and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375° for 35 minutes. Serve hot with cream. Makes 6 servings.
