Ingredients/Components

  • each pkg - 2 oz
  • warm water - 1/4 c
  • warm buttermilk - 2 c
  • flour - 5 c
  • sugar - 1/3 c
  • baking powder - 1 Tbsp
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • salt - 2 tsp
  • shortening - 1 c
  • melted butter - 1 item

How to make angel biscuits:

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand five minutes. Stir in buttermilk; set aside. In large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until resembles coarse meal. Stir in yeast-buttermilk mixture. Mix well.

Turn out on lightly floured surface. Knead lightly 3 to 4 times. Roll to a 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter.

Place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place about 1 1/2 hours. Bake at 450° for 8 to 10 minutes. Brush with melted butter. Makes 2 1/2 dozen biscuits.
