All-american apple pie
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1/4 1/2
- cinnamon - 1/2 tsp
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- brown sugar - 1/2 c
- butter - 1/4 c
- water - 2 3
- shortening - 1 c
- chopped walnuts - 1/2 c
- margarine - 2 Tbsp
- egg, beaten - 1 item
- dash of ground nutmeg - 1 item
- tart apples - 4 item
- Combine sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg
How to make all-american apple pie:
Peel apples and cut into slices. Combine sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg. Place half of the apples in crust and sprinkle with sugars. Top with remaining apples. Sprinkle with nuts. Dot with butter. Cover with lattice top and brush dough with beaten egg.Bake at 375° for 40 to 50 minutes until apples are soft and dough is lightly browned. Serve warm or chilled with whipped cream or ice cream.Crust for All-American Apple Pie:2 3/4 c. sifted all-purpose flour1/2 tsp. salt1 c. shortening1/4 c. butter2 to 3 Tbsp. water Combine flour, shortening, salt and butter with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in water, a little at a time, to form a dough. Divide pastry in half. Form each to a flat round. Wrap in waxed paper or plastic wrap. Chill.
Roll out half of pastry. Fit into 9-inch pie pan. Roll out remaining pastry to make strips for lattice top for pie.
