Sweet and sour meatballs
Ingredients/Components
- milk - 1/4 c
- salt - 3/4 tsp
- vegetable oil - 2 Tbsp
- egg - 1 item
- raisins - 1/3 c
- lemon juice - 3 Tbsp
- light brown sugar - 2 Tbsp
- ground nutmeg - 1/2 tsp
- chopped onion
- tomato sauce - 1/2 c
- chopped parsley - 1/4 c
- lean ground beef - 1 lb
- fresh bread crumbs - 1/2 c
- ground pork - 1/2 lb
- ground veal - 1/2 lb
- can whole tomatoes, broken up - 1 oz
How to make sweet and sour meatballs:
Combine beef, pork, veal, bread crumbs, parsley, salt, nutmeg, egg and milk in a large bowl. Mix together well. Shape mixture into balls, using 1 tablespoon for each.Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet. Brown meatballs in 2 batches. As meatballs brown, remove from skillet, with a slotted spoon, to plate.
Add remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to skillet. Add onion. Saute until tender, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce, raisins, brown sugar and lemon juice.
Return meatballs to skillet. Bring to boiling. Lower heat, cover and simmer 15 minutes. Uncover; cook, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes longer or until slightly thickened.
