Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- flour
- butter - 1/2 c
- soda - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 2 Tbsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- vinegar - 1 Tbsp
- Crisco - 1/2 c
- red food color - 2 oz
- cake flour Softasilk
How to make red velvet cake:
Icing:5 Tbsp. flour1 c. sugar1 tsp. vanilla1 c. milk1/2 c. Crisco1/2 c. butter Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste with food coloring and cocoa. Add to sugar mixture. Sift flour and salt, then add buttermilk and vanilla. Fold in vinegar and soda by hand (do not beat). Bake in a greased and floured pan at 350° for 20 to 30 minutes.Icing: Cook flour and milk until thick, stirring constantly. Cool flour and milk mixture. Beat sugar, butter and Crisco well with electric mixer. Add vanilla. Add cooled flour and milk mixture a little at a time, beating until of right consistency to spread. This gets fluffy like whipped cream. Frost cooled cake.
