- vanilla - 1 tsp
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- soda - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 3 tsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- vinegar - 1 Tbsp
- Crisco - 1/2 c
- oleo - 1/2 c
- red food coloring - 1/2 oz
- cake flour - 2 c
- chopped pecans optional - 1 c
- Cream shortening and sugar
How to make red cake:
Make paste in cup of cocoa and coloring. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, 1 at a time, mixing well after each one. Add vanilla and red paste. Sift flour and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk. Dissolve soda in vinegar. Fold vinegar in without stirring. Bake in 2 (8-inch) round cake pans at 350° for 35 minutes. Cool and ice with Vanilla Cream Cheese Icing.Vanilla Cream Cheese Icing:1 (1 lb.) box powdered sugar1 (8 oz.) cream cheese1/2 c. oleo2 tsp. vanilla1 c. chopped pecans (optional) Have all ingredients at room temperature.
