Ingredients/Components

  • sugar
  • vanilla - 1/2 tsp
  • milk - 3/4 c
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • flour - 2 c
  • cornstarch - 3 Tbsp
  • egg yolks - 4 item
  • baking powder - 2 tsp
  • egg whites - 4 item
  • nuts - 1/2 c
  • sifted powdered sugar - 2 c
  • poppy seed - 3/4 c
  • c butter - 3/4 item
  • Soak poppy seed in milk 1 to 3 hours
  • Add milk and cook until it thickens, stirring constantly

How to make poppy seed cake:

Have ingredients at room temperature. Soak poppy seed in milk 1 to 3 hours.

Sift flour; measure and add baking powder and salt. Sift together three times. Cream butter, using medium speed on mixer. Add sugar gradually and cream well. Add egg whites, one at a time. Beat well after addition of each. Turn to low speed and add dry ingredients and milk-soaked poppy seed alternately.

Bake in two greased and floured 9-inch layer pans at 375° about 30 minutes. (Cake will raise only about 1/2 inch). Cool and put layers together with filling. Ice with Butter Icing.Poppy Seed Cake Filling:1 c. sugar1/4 tsp. salt3 Tbsp. cornstarch1 3/4 c. milk4 egg yolks1/2 tsp. vanilla1/2 c. nuts Mix sugar, salt and cornstarch together. Add milk and cook until it thickens, stirring constantly. Pour some of custard into slightly beaten yolks, then pour egg yolk mixture into custard and cook 2 minutes. Cool. Add vanilla and nuts. Spread between layers.Poppy Seed Cake Butter Icing:1/2 c. soft butter2 c. sifted powdered sugar2 Tbsp. milk1 1/2 tsp. vanilla Blend together butter and sugar. Add milk and vanilla and stir until smooth. Cream well, using high speed of mixer until it looks like whipped cream.
