Oven apple butter
Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- cinnamon
- cloves - 1/2 tsp
- allspice - 1/2 tsp
- applesauce
How to make oven apple butter:
Wash apples; cut out bad spots but do not peel or remove seeds. This adds flavor and color. Cut in quarters and cook until very soft. Run through sieve to make applesauce. (Sauce may be stored in refrigerator several days.)In a large roaster, combine applesauce, cinnamon, allspice, sugar and cloves. Simmer in oven at 250° for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until thick, stirring every 30 minutes. Drop a spoonful on saucer; if it jells around edges of butter, it is done. Seal in jars.
Hint: I use Winesap apples and double recipe. Makes 12 pints. Delicious!
