  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • eggs - 2 item
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 3/4 c
  • almond extract - 1 item
  • baking powder - 3 tsp
  • melted butter - 2 Tbsp
  • powdered sugar - 1 item
  • lemon juice - 1 item
  • sweet milk - 1 c
  • sugar * - 1 c
  • water * - 1 c
  • soda * - 1 tsp
  • orange peel * - 2 c
  • floured pecans - 1 c

How to make orange bread:

*You can use 6 or 8 ounces candied orange peel and 1/2 cup marmalade instead of candying your own.

Parboil orange peel in water with soda for 10 minutes. Drain and rinse well in clear water. Scrape white out of inside of peel and discard it. Cut peel finely. Add sugar and water. Cook slowly until tender and thick.

Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Beat together sweet milk, eggs and melted butter. Stir into the dry ingredients. Add warm orange peel and floured pecans. Put in 1 large or 2 small well-greased loaf pans. Bake 1 hour for small loaves and 1 1/2 hours for large loaf at 350°. Orange bread is done when a toothpick inserted in center of loaf comes out clean. Mix lemon, powdered sugar and almond extract. Drizzle over top of bread.
