Ingredients/Components

  • boiling water - 1 c
  • dates, cut - 1 c
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • flour
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • sugar - 1 c
  • egg - 1 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • Add water and let stand
  • brown sugar - 1/2 c
  • pecans, chopped fine - 1 c
  • milk - 2 Tbsp

How to make date cake:

Sprinkle soda over dates. Add water and let stand. Mix flour and salt together and set aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and vanilla, then add flour alternating with the date mixture. Pour into 9 x 13-inch pan and bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes.Topping:4 Tbsp. butter, melted1/2 c. brown sugar1 c. pecans, chopped fine2 Tbsp. milk Mix all topping ingredients together and cook to boiling. Put on top of cake and place under broiler for 3 minutes.
