Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/3 c
  • milk
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • baking powder - 3 tsp
  • vegetable oil - 1/4 c
  • egg - 1 item
  • chopped walnuts - 1/2 c
  • sifted flour - 3 c
  • dates, cut in small pieces - 1 c
  • orange marmalade or apricot jam - 2/3 c

How to make date and nut bread:

Mix 1/2 cup flour with the dates and nuts. Set aside. Blend together the egg, milk, oil, sugar and marmalade or jam. Sift the remaining flour, salt and baking powder into the bowl with the liquid mixture and mix quickly, only enough to moisten the flour. Add dates and nuts and fold in. Pour into greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch pan and bake at 350° for 1 hour. Test with toothpick. Cool for 30 minutes on rack before turning out of pan. Cool thoroughly before wrapping to store. Freezes very well.
