  • chopped pecans - 1/2 c
  • pkg - 1 oz
  • packed brown sugar - 1 c
  • butter or margarine - 1/2 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 3 Tbsp
  • baking soda - 1/2 tsp
  • shortening - 1/4 c
  • all-purpose flour
  • oats, old-fashioned or quick-cooking - 1 c
  • Add flour, oats and baking soda

How to make caramel apple bars:

Cream butter, shortening and brown sugar until fluffy. Add flour, oats and baking soda. Mix well. Stir in pecans. Set aside 2 cups. Press remaining mixture into a 13 x 9-inch pan.Filling:4 1/2 c. peeled, sliced apples3 Tbsp. flour3 Tbsp. butter or margarine1 (14 oz.) pkg. caramels Toss apples with flour and spoon over crust. Melt the caramels and butter over low heat. Drizzle over apples. Top with the reserved oat mixture. Bake at 400° for 25 to 30 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool before cutting into bars. Yields 15 to 20 servings. Especially good served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
