  • sugar - 3 c
  • vanilla - 2 tsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • soda - 1/2 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • boiling water - 1 Tbsp
  • all-purpose flour - 3 c
  • vegetable shortening - 1/2 c
  • whole eggs - 5 item
  • butter no substitute - 1/2 c

How to make buttermilk pound cake:

Cream butter, shortening and sugar together. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each. Beat in vanilla. Combine flour with salt and add alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour. Dissolve soda in hot water and beat into mixture. Pour into greased and floured tube pan. Bake at 300° for 1 1/2 hours, testing for doneness after 1 1/4 hours. Let rest 5 to 10 minutes before turning out of pan.
